NJICL Coaching Essentials Training
November 18 @ 8:30 am - 3:30 pm
Hello NJICL Coaches! – if you were not able to join us in September for the Leaders’ Summit, this is your last chance to participate in Coach Ben Tufford’s OTB101 on-the-bike training before the season begins on December 1st.
You’ll learn the NICA-endorsed training method, which includes the progressive steps needed to teach anyone (even yourself) both basic and advanced mountain biking skills. You will also learn about experiential teaching techniques, how to accommodate different learning styles, and how to create a positive learning environment for young riders.
This one-day session is entirely focused on coaching philosophy, practice structure and NICA on-the-bike skills. It’s intended to provide all coaches with the standard skill-set required to develop and run practices that align with NICA core values. The session is split between an interactive discussion on coaching philosophy, risk management, and a detailed overview of how to structure and execute an effective practice. The on-the-bike session dives deeper into practice structure and the mechanics of teaching the key skills/competencies.
Participation in this course is critical to ensure that standards are being applied universally by all teams during their practices. Teams should encourage all of their assistant coaches – even ride leaders, to attend. Everyone having the same baseline on coaching philosophy and skills makes running practices/rides much more manageable and safe. Attendees will get their NICA On-the-Bike Skills certification and become comfortable with Risk Management 1 and NICA Student-Athlete Coaching Philosophy (Online webinars and tests are still required. Find them HERE). 3 CEU’s will also be awarded if you have not previously attended this course..
A word about the weather
Please understand that if the weather does not co-operate, we might end up canceling this session, and then won’t be able to re-schedule until the spring; however, our threshold for cancelling will be pretty high, because we know this session is really important to many of you, so freezing temps or a light drizzle alone will not have us cancelling – please dress accordingly. We thought it was important to roll the dice, and at least try to offer this important session before winter takes over. In the event of a weather-related cancellation, we will fully refund your sign-up fee.
We will conduct our session at the Collier School. Home of the Collier Pacers NJICL Team; it was the venue for our 2017 Summit and is a potential 2019 race venue.
This clinic will be held outdoors, so please bring your bike and appropriate riding and safety gear for the weather – we recommend layers. The fee incudes lunch and a digital copy the NICA Coaching Manual.
