Youth Cycling League to Launch “Try it Out” Program

Carolan Foundation Awards Grant to NJ Interscholastic Cycling League

CHESTER, NJ – The New Jersey Interscholastic Cycling League (NJICL) will be reaching more students in 2018 thanks to a grant from The Tina & Richard V. Carolan Foundation.

The program, dubbed “Try-It-Out”, will aim to introduce students across New Jersey to the sport of mountain biking. The program will launch in March of 2018, and run throughout the year, said Ken Seebeck, NJICL’s League Director. “We are incredibly thankful to the Carolan Foundation for funding this
landmark moment in our league’s history. We have experienced tremendous growth through word-of-mouth, and now we can share our program with a larger audience of students.”

The league is committed to providing a positive experience for all student-athletes, regardless of ability level. The Try-It-Out program will be staffed by professional coaches, and provide high quality bicycles, helmets and gear for students to ride and try. It also includes female specific rides and clinics, supporting NICA’s GRiT – Girls Riding Together – initiative. The program will provide commemorative shirts for all riders.

“We build strong body, mind and character in our athletes, with an unwavering focus on inclusivity and equality. Everyone rides; there are no tryouts or cuts, and no one sits the bench.” said Seebeck.

In learning of the support, Austin McInerny, National President of NICA, stated “The Tina & Richard V. Carolan Foundation’s significant support to the New Jersey League will enable a concerted effort to be undertaken to get more teenagers, and especially young women, introduced to cycling and joining their school’s mountain bike team. As we have seen across America, when students are introduced to cycling at an early age, they become life-long cyclists and they build strong bodies, minds and character thru their involvement and active participation on their school cycling team. I am extremely thankful to the Carolan Family for their generous support and belief in our mission and vision.”

The NJICL is a chapter of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) – a California-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. As one of 21 leagues across the country, the NJICL is focused on youth development through cycling, and organizes a first-class series of races for middle and high school student athletes. Each season includes a five-race series, a coaches’ Leaders’ Summit for training and certification, and a variety of skills clinics and rides.
